Introduction
  • Arguably the most influential event of the period in American History known as 'Manifest Destiny' 

  • Lasted approximately seven years, from around 1848 to 1855. 

  • Was NOT the first "gold rush" in America

    • ​In 1799, the Carolina Gold Rush occurred, making it the first 

  • Other gold rushes occurred after the one in CA

    • There was a big ​gold rush in Alaska from around 1897 - 1904

  • Starting location: Coloma, California

  • First discoverer of tons of gold in CA: James W. Marshall

  • Reinvigorated the American economy after an economic "bust" (Panic of 1837)

  • Towns expanded, and people began moving into the area called California, which is currently the state with the highest population
